Austin, Texas

You know you’re hearing the liberal beat in the heart of a conservative state when you consider that this city’s rallying cry is “Keep Austin Weird.” Equal parts college campus, state capital, high-tech boom town, and possibly the live music center of the universe, Austin dishes up all manner of world cuisine. But face it: you’re in the middle of Texas. Eat the barbecue (with sauce on the side if you know what’s good for you) or revel in a regional food fusion that makes expats as nostalgic about Austin’s Tex-Mex as a certain Frenchman was about madeleines. Walk it off with a stroll over Congress Avenue Bridge, where the country’s largest bat colony takes flight at dusk—or up Sixth Street, where the club scene rocks the night.

Quick Quiche

Reviewed on Aug. 19, 2008 by jessicah
This was awesome. I did make some changes though. Used sliced cheese instead of shredded. Layered that on the bottom, then put the bacon crumbles. Added another light layer of cheese. Added a layer of lean honey ham (ripped into pieces). Added the egg mixture (used Southwestern Egg Beaters) and substituted onion powder for onions. Served with Sri Racha (kickin chicken) sauce. It was a hit!

Neiman Marcus Cake II

Reviewed on Aug. 17, 2008 by PrincessBee
I made this last night and took it to our Sat. night party where a type of chocolate is the normal request. Even the dieters had seconds - AND thirds! I did double the cream cheese, used 1 box of sugar and added pecans like the other suggestions! This morning I've gotten requests! A hit!!!!

Spicy Garlic Lime Chicken

Reviewed on Aug. 15, 2008 by Deb
I adore this recipe! You can almost completely eliminate the butter and olive oil. I put about a teaspoon of olive oil in a spritzer and spray a non-stick skillet, however any cooking spray would work. I've subbed fresh garlic for the powder but either way, this chicken rocks!
